I got this lesson from the book Discovering Great Artists (ISBN 0-935607-09-9). I haven't tried it out with students yet (I'll be doing that tonight), but I did do a painting myself and it was really fun. The result is a beautifully textured painting. Here is the shortened version of the lesson. I will be making a full lesson plan for this and I will post a message when I have it ready. Materials Needed:Tempera paint in a variety of colors Powdered cornstarch Craft sticks Paper Containers for paint Trays for paint (I use small Styrofoam plates) 1. Mix 1/2 cup paint with 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch 2. Scoop dollops of paint colors onto trays 3. Apply paint to paper with craft sticks 4. Allow paint to dry overnight ** Paint thicknesses vary and it needs to be fairly accurate. If the paint is too thick, it isn't going to spread. If it is too thin, it will dry flat. You may have to make some adjustments to the thickness by adding water or more cornstarch. Here is the example I painted. I'm not much of a painter but it was really fun to do.

We did this last spring at the Children's Workshop and they seemed to really like it. I'm getting ready to do it next week with the 3rd graders at the school where I am doing my student teaching. I think they will really like it.
